Summer Extravaganza 2018

Once again we will be running our “Summer Extravaganza” program on Mondays and Wednesdays in July. New this summer: 2 sessions for our Young Stroke Survivor group at Amica at Edgemont on July 16th & 23rd – 10 a.m – 1 p.m. We are very grateful to donations from Mt. Seymour Lions Club, Ambleside Tiddley Cove Lions and two private donations. On Mondays we will meet at Maison Senior Living in West Vancouver and on Wednesdays at the North Shore Neighbourhood House in North Vancouver. Each day the program runs from 10 a.m. – 1:45 p.m.

The centre is closed in August and re-opens on Tuesday, September 4th at the North Shore Neighborhood House, and on Monday, September 10th for programs at Maison Senior Living and Amica at Edgemont.

Surefeet Balance Program Returns

We are once again pleased to be able to offer the ‘Surefeet’ program taught by Judy Bjornson, and Susan Bock Smith. The program will be offered every Tuesday 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 pm & every Thursday 11 a.m. – 12 noon for 10 weeks starting March 6th at the North Shore Neighbourhood House gym. The last session will be May 8th. It is believed that more progress is made if you attend the program more frequently but if you can only attend one session each week, please let me know. The cost for NSSRC members will be $3/session x 20 sessions = $60. If you only go once/week then the total is $30. Your spot will be confirmed once you have paid.

Please note: N.S.S.R.C. is charged $10/class for each person. You pay $3 and the Centre pays $7. If you are absent we still have to pay the $7. Please be sure you’re committed.

Spring SongShine

SongShine provides effective music-based vocal therapy classes for persons whose speech has been affected by stroke, Parkinson's disease, other neurological disorders or aging voices. The program builds voices with a holistic approach that integrates breath awareness and body alignment, vocalizing (singing exercises), diction and articulation exercises, creative imagination, becoming a character (role playing) and emotional engagement.

Goodbye Jasmine, and Hello Erica!

FAREWELL to our Art Therapist, Jasmine Cadenhead, who is heading off on a new adventure in Mexico. We will miss her but she will be back in June to help complete the mural at Lonsdale Quay with the students from Alcuin College.

WELCOME to our new Art Therapist, Erica Pang, who will take over our art therapy program on Wednesdays and Thursdays at the North Shore Neighbourhood House.

Caregiver Group

Caregiver group will be held the last Monday of each month at Maison Senior Living. Our first meeting will be Monday, September 25th at 11 a.m. This time is for any caregivers, family members or friends of NSSRC members caring for someone recovering from a stroke. The goal of this group is to support one another, share resources and have a time to connect with those walking a similar journey of caregiving. Newcomers are very welcome. We warmly invite you to come try out this group. Facilitator: Sue Carabetta -NSSRC coordinator.

Capilano Mall Next Steps Stroke Recovery walking program begins Friday Sept 15th. Sponsored by March of Dimes Canada (MODC) we meet at the Food Court on Friday mornings at 9:15 am. New participants are welcome to join this fun active group who moves in small groupings at their own pace around Cap Mall. Living with Stroke

Living with Stroke™ is a free interactive 7-week program delivered in communities across BC and the Yukon and offered by the Heart & Stroke Foundation. It can provide you with the tools and support to: improve your quality of life, reduce the risk of another stroke, participate in your recovery and help you find the help you need to adjust to life after stroke. The next session on the North Shore will start Friday, October 13th (10 a.m. – 12 noon) at the Parkgate Community Centre (3625 Banff Court, North Vancouver) and will be facilitated by Jane Rundle, and Gail Snelling. It runs for a total of 7 Fridays ending November 24th.

The Lipstick Project

Lipstick Project:  We have recently partnered up with the Lipstick Project whose mandate is to offer free professional spa services to those individuals who are facing significant health challenges. The volunteers will visit our Centre on Tuesdays starting in October to offer manicures to anyone who is interested. There will be a sign-up sheet available later in the month. Men are welcome too!

Fame for Stroke

FAME FOR STROKE: The West Vancouver Community Centre in collaboration with a UBC research team is offering a specialized exercise program for stroke survivors. Designed specifically and proven to improve fitness, mobility and strength for people after stroke living in the community. The small group class (one instructor to four participants) includes functional strengthening exercises, agility and fitness exercises and balance exercises. Suitable for people at any time after stroke who can stand for 5 minutes, walk 10 metres (even with a walking aid) and communicate with the instructor. Talk to Gail Snelling for more Information.
